syria releases noted HR activist
Coming out of Syria- does this portend actual change? Is what we are seeing the result of international pressure or true reform from within? This decision by the State Supreme Court- the first beneficiary of relaxed emergency laws?

Today SANA announced that charges were dropped against human rights activist Aktham Naise. Naise was on trial for ‘tarnishing the country’s image’ after publishing a report on human rights in spring ’04, which called for greater transparency, provided detailed accounts of torture, and demanded a revocation of the Syrian emergency laws. He was in jail for five months before being released on bail in August '04. Amnesty International declared his charges to be in violation of international law.
